Angelina Jolie Will Play A Male Character
A male role will be played by a woman! After a long period negotiations, Tom Cruise denied the proposal to play as “Edwin A. Salt“-in a film by Columbia Pictures, directed by Philip Noyce and produced by Lorenzo di Benvenuta and Sunil Perkash.
According to recent news, Cruise chose this project over “The 28th Amendment”. Now, it looks like he’s not doing either one. The point of this article, though, is not Tom Cruise’s flakiness, but rumors that the role of “Edwin A. Salt”, which was to be played by him, will now be played by a woman. Which woman among Hollywood actresses is able to assume a role, moreover, a male role in a thriller? Well, after performances in movies like “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” Angelina Jolie is definitely a good candidate.
Indeed Jolie is a rare female who is viable on the action genre, which has always been a predominately male domain.
On Monday morning, Variety confirmed rumors by reporting that Jolie has already decided to play the title character. The problem is that the title character is a Mr. and not a Miss. So will they rewrite the entire script for Jolie? Change “Edwin A. Salt” to Edwina maybe? Well, Variety also adds that the project won’t require many changes to accommodate her in the role. Interesting.
If everything goes as planned, Jolie will be portraying a CIA officer, who is fingered as a Russian sleeper spy. As we learn from The Movie Insider,
Mr (Miss) Edwin eludes capture by superiors who are convinced he is out to assassinate the president. While trying to reunite with his family, he struggles to prove that there is someone who is the traitor.
The new twins’, Knox and Vivienne, mom is certainly no stranger to the action hero genre, but I wonder how the movie’s screenwriter is going to modify a role that was originally intended to be played by a man to successfully fit a woman.
Yet to be titled, the movie will probably begin shooting in February of 2009. Hopefully Angelina Jolie will portray the character in a good light, making it easier for more women to break into this genre and be cast in these types of roles.
