Visual Effects Not Enough To Win Over Online Reviewers Of Darkest Hour

Visual Effects Not Enough To Win Over Online Reviewers Of Darkest HourThe visual effects light up the screen in this wannabe 3d cinema spectacle. Five vacationing youths enjoy the sights and sounds of Moscow until the unthinkable happens. Aliens that feed on energy and are not visible to mere earthlings destroy the world, apparently starting with Russia, except for a few survivors. The 3d cinema effects are snazzy but according to the online peanut gallery, and they should know, they are wasted on a poorly acted film with no cohesive plot. The visual effects were the feature that most reviewers liked.

The consensus seems to be that this is a bad Russian remake of ‘Independence Day’. After much digging, I did finally find a few positive reviews. Though one of those decried the lack of an effective ending, which derision I encountered often while sifting reviews for this post. The cast are largely unknowns, which sometimes is a plus. Emile Hirsch traded on the star power of Leonardo DiCaprio, and fooled me. At first I thought, ‘well, it looks like that guy finally got himself an interesting part’. My favorite part of this movie, besides the fun visual effects, is the kitty that gets the protective alien gear. You can find that awesome 3d cinema moment in the gallery of the web site.

It is nice that since the end of that pesky cold war, we get to see a warmer and fuzzier Russia than ever before. If not in the back drop in this movie then in the simple fact that such a movie can be created from that mysterious land.
