The Last Mistress The Last

Directed by Catherine Breillat, the Last Mistress movie will be released in July and stars Asia Argento, Fu’ad Ait Aattou, Roxane Mesquida, Anne Parillaud, and Amira Casar. The film is based on the novel written by Jules-Amédée Barbey d’Aurevilly in 1851.

The Last Mistress describes the life of a man named Ryno de Marigny (Fu’ad Ait Aattou) who is torn between two women. De Marigny plans to marry a woman from the French Aristocracy, but rumors are slated that he will not be able to break off his affair with a woman he has had a long-term relationship.

The New York Times reports that on the eve of his marriage, de Marigny has to confront his past and only after, he will be able to plan his future.

As the bride-to-be’s grandmother forces de Marigny to confront his past as a notorious womanizer, the film flashes back to reveal the intense decade the lovers shared. Although de Marigny appears to want to shut Vellini out forever, her passions may be far too much for him to deny.

According to Time Out London, the Last Mistress brings its viewers the sexual and social ethics of the 1830s.

Swiftly immersing us in the fashions not just the clothes and hairstyles, but the sexual and social ethics of the 1830s, Breillat’s meticulous direction and script glosses the mores and literary concerns of the period, but also relates a rich, engrossing story. Sharp, witty, utterly unsentimental and thanks to Yorgos Arvanitis camerawork and some judiciously chosen music gravely beautiful.
