W: Oliver Stone On President Bush

W: Oliver Stone On President BushControversial Director Oliver Stone, better known for his movies about Presidents John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon as well as films such as Natural Born Killers and World Trade Center, is planning to shoot a film about the current US president, George W. Bush. The film will touch upon Bush’s post-presidential career as well as life inside the White House.

The production of the movie, “W,” is supposed to start next month and Stone has already cast most of the actors for the main roles. The role of former British prime minister Tony Blair is reportedly taken by Ioan Gruffudd while Josh Brolin, James Cromwell, Elizabeth Banks and Ellen Burstyn will star as George W. Bush, George Bush Sr., Laura and Barbara Bush.

The idea for such a movie with the president still serving his term in office is unprecedented, and some people consider it to be nothing short of crazy, even if Stone says that the film will be ”a fair, true portrait of the man.” As the Environmental Republican says:

”W is the improbable story of a man who went to the White House despite getting fewer votes than his opponent; who became commander-in-chief despite having avoided military combat himself; and who became the least popular president ever elected to a second term. W will shock and surprise you and leave you questioning everything you believe to be true.”

Others such as Jim Snowden’s Second Omnibus criticize Oliver Stone directly:

I understand that Josh Brolin will be playing our National Nightmare in Oliver Stone’s movie, and while I think I understand why Stone is interested in making a movie about Bush–like Bush, Stone had a difficult relationship with his father and a long term infatuation with booze and powder–I’d rather have Stone do an autobiography.

To be fair to Stone, however, those familiar with the film’s script say that it’s more sympathetic to Bush than many might suppose. Besides, perhaps the point is not what made Stone interested in making such a movie, but more what is the opinion of people after they’ve watched it.
