The Last Station

The Last StationDistributed by Sony Pictures Classics, directed by Michael Hoffman, produced by Jens Meurer, Chris Curling and Bonnie Arnold, “The Last Station” is among the upcoming movie DVD releases. The film is going to be widely released in early 2010.

This biographical film is devoted to Russian socialist writer Leo Tolstoy’s final year.

The Countess Sofya, Tolstoy’s wife, who has been married to Tolstoy almost 50 years and bore Tolstoy 13 children, abruptly gets disappointed in her husband. Tolstoy, who remained faithful to his principles, refuses his family, his noble title and property in favor of his new religion.

Later on Tolstoy’s wife finds out that it was her husbands’s disciple, Chertkov, who convinced the great writer to sign a new will where Tolstoy leaves the rights to his novels to the Russian people rather than his own family. However, Sofya tries to be stubborn by using various tricks and to get what she thinks belongs to hers. Her extreme conduct makes Chertkov persuade Tolstoy what damage his wife can cause to his legacy.

Then in the middle of the events Tolstoy’s new assistant Valentin appears, who is so young and naive. Soon Valentin becomes Chertkov’s and vindictive Sofya’s pawn.

Valentin falls in love with Masha who supports Tolstoy’s new religion. The free thinking and the unconventional principles towards love lead Valentin to confusion.

The film stars James McAvoy as Valentin Bulgakov, Christopher Plummer as Leo Tolstoy, Paul Giamatti as Vladimir Chertkov, and Helen Mirren as Sofya Tolstoy.

“The Last Station” is a drama film in which the beginning and the ending of two romances is brought forward.
