He became a star as Vinnie Barbarino on the sitcom Welcome Back Kotter, but became a superstar later when he started acting n films. What are some of your favorite John Travolta movies? He’s been in funny movies, dramas, comedies, and cult classics. Let’s see how many of these you recognize.
Clearly, Saturday Night Fever, where he played Tony Manero in 1977 was his first step into greatness and for many, one of the all-time favorite John Travolta movies. He followed along that “musical” vibe with Grease in 1978, playing the role of Danny Zuko. Staying Alive, in 1983, a sequel to Saturday Night Fever, wasn’t quite as well received.
Country music and cowboy boots became more popular after the release of Urban Cowboy in 1980, where Travolta starred as Bud, who married Sissy, played by Debra Winger.
In terms of funny movies, there were a couple of family-friendly John Travolta movies in the 1990’s including Look Who’s Talking, Look Who’s Talking Too, and Look Who’s Talking Now.
Who can forget Travolta as Vincent Vega in 1994’s cult classic Pulp Fiction? That started a comeback for the actor and launch a sequence of great John Travolta movies including Broken Arrow, Get Shorty, Michael, and Face/Off. Face/Off was a remarkable film where actors John Travolta and Nicholas cage played rivals (cop/robber) and literally traded faces. They both did a great job acting the other’s attributes.
The only one of the John Travolta movies that was universally panned by critics was Battlefield Earth in 2000. But once again, Travolta made a comeback with subsequent movies Hairspray, Wild Hogs, and Ladder 49.
