Fireflies In The Garden
Fireflies in the Garden, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Dennis Lee and written by Robert Frost, is set for theatrical release this Summer. The movie boasts a rich cast; starring Julia Roberts as Lisa Waechter, Ryan Reynolds as Michael Waechter and Willem Dafoe as Charles Waechter.
Fireflies in the Garden details the life of a family struggling to cope with a devastating and unforeseen tragedy. The family confronts a tragic turn when a car accident injures the head of the family, Charles, and kills his wife, Lisa. After the accident, the hostility between Waechter and his son, Michael, runs so deep that Michael takes a revenge at the end of the movie.
Empire Movies reports that Fireflies in the Garden is based on the director’s own experience.
The story, loosely based on Lee’s life, will explore the complexities of love and commitment in a family torn apart when faced with an unexpected tragedy. Carrie Anne Moss, Ryan Reynolds, Julia Roberts and Emily Watson also star.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, being filmed in and around Austin, Fireflies in the Garden makes effective use of its locations and slides between two different time periods.
Michael does make a startling discovery in going through his mom’s things, which adds a melodramatic note that is never thoroughly convincing. A resolution, or at least a truce, is reached at the end that also lacks conviction. It arrives too easily, and you suspect if Michael didn’t live in New York the truce would be a short-lived.
