Warning: This post can contain spoilers about the movie “50 first dates.”
Henry — one of the main heroes of the romantic comedy movie “50 first dates,” played by Adam Sandler — meets the girl of his dreams.
She’s beautiful, smart, with a good sense of humor… What else can a man dream about? She seems to like Henry, too, and she even agrees to meet him the next day, but…
But when the next day comes, this girl, Lucy (played by the talented actress Drew Barrymore), remembers nothing of their meeting and doesn’t even recognize Henry.
No, Lucy doesn’t pretend not to remember him. She’s just suffering from a rare form of anterograde amnesia: she wakes up every morning, being sure that it’s October 13, Sunday. She remembers everything till October 13 — the day she got a brain injury in a car accident, and doesn’t remember even a single day after.
To tell you the truth, I don’t like romantic films at all… But even I was really touched, watching how Henry was getting acquainted with Lucy every day, how patiently he tried to explain her that they were dating… And how, in the end of the film, he continued to explain her every morning that he was her husband and the father of their daughter…
“50 first dates” is quite an old film (it was released in 2004), but I watched it for the first time several months ago and thought it was one of the best romantic movies ever. I also thought that Lucy with her strange amnesia type was just the creation of the filmmakers.
But a few days ago I learned that many romantic comedy movies are based on true stories, and “50 first dates” isn’t an exception. Not long ago a 47-year-old British woman named Michelle Philpots gave an interview to TODAY, and her story was really like the story of the film.
Wanna know what Lucy Whitmore and Michelle Philpots have in common? You’ll find out in the continuation of this post…
